Music for a Universal Consciousness of Solidarity
Full paper due by 15 April 2010

The Toda Institute for Global Peace and Policy Research will publish a special issue of its journal Peace & Policy on the theme of “Music for a Universal Consciousness of Solidarity.” Peace & Policy #15 will be distributed to a distinguished group of scholars and organizations worldwide and may also be published as a book by Transaction Publishers.

Exploration of the Theme:

We selected the theme “Music for a Global Consciousness of Solidarity” to explore music's ability to bring the self and the other into a dialogue of solidarity. The goal is to call forth and to find ways in which music might promote a sense of universal consciousness and responsibility, so that all human beings, whoever and wherever they are, can become conscious of their common destiny. Faced with many dangers and obstacles, humanity must find common solutions to prevent and overcome them, and explore pathways that could lead us to a universal consciousness of our interconnectedness. We need this type of awareness to find such solutions without excluding diversity. What contributions can music make to reach these goals? How can ensure that our musicking serves and does not hinder these goals?

To be considered for publication by our review committee, an abstract and bio have to reach the Toda Institute by 15 January, and the full paper by 15 April 2010.
