Toda Institute for Global Peace and Policy Research Toda.eNewsletter #9
5 November 2009
Dear Friends of the Toda Institute and Members of TIAC,
Since our last Toda.eNewsletter in September there has been much activity and many exciting changes at the Toda Institute. We are happy to announce some personnel changes, our upcoming conference in Tokyo, The Power of Dialogue in a Time of Global Crisis, and an exciting call for papers
On October 1st of this year Kevin Clements was appointed Secretary General of the Toda Institute. He currently serves as the Director of the National Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Otago, New Zealand, and as the Secretary General of the International Peace Research Association (IPRA). Professor Clements was the keynote speaker at the Inaugural Lecture of our Institute in 1996 at the United Nations University in Tokyo, and has been a strong supporter of all our activities ever since. He will contribute to the expansion of our worldwide network of peace researchers specializing in his fields of expertise, which include issues such as conflict transformation, peacebuilding, human rights, sustainable developments, UN reform, and dialogue of civilizations.
Also, on October 1st of this year Dr. Satoko Takahashi was appointed to serve as Research Director. Dr. Takahashi has served as Program Manager for the Toda Institute since its formation in 1996. Her many contributions in this role are deeply appreciated. In her new role as Research Director she will be responsible for the management of all research programs and for coordinating the activities of the Secretary General and other senior research fellows. We look forward to working with Dr. Takahashi for years to come. Please join us in congratulating her on this important milestone.
Toda International Conference on “The Power of Dialogue in a Time of Global Crisis”Our conference, “The Power of Dialogue in a Time of Global Crisis,” will be held in Tokyo on November 22-23. The keynote speaker will be Sarah Wider, Professor of English and Women’s Studies at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York. Her keynote address is entitled “Peace through Listening: Conversations across Time and Place.” The conference will seek to find the role and power of dialogue in conflict transformation, peace building, and sustainable development.
Call for PapersThis year’s volume of Peace & Policy (Volume 14), “Ethical Transformations for a Sustainable Future” will be converted into a paperback book early in 2010. We are seeking fresh, unpublished material to include in the book version; however we have a very tight deadline of November 30, 2009 for the submission of your full paper. If you have an unpublished or nearly completed work that focuses on sustainability and ethical transformations, please feel free to submit your work to us. The full call for papers can be found at http://www.toda.org/.
We thank you for your continued support and we look forward to seeing some of you in November, and hearing from all of you soon.
With best regards,
