Dear Colleagues and Friends of the Toda Institute,

Today 8 September 2009, the founder of the Toda Institute, Dr. Daisaku Ikeda, has issued a proposal entitled “Building Global Solidarity Toward Nuclear Abolition,” on the 52nd anniversary of Josei Toda’s own declaration. It outlines five major steps to be taken over the next five years.

We are proud to announce the publication of two new books edited and co-edited by members of our Toda International Advisory Committee.

Adding to the current momentum towards nuclear disarmament, The Challenge of Abolishing Nuclear Weapons (Transaction Publishers 2009)is the result of the September 2007 conference co-organized in San Francisco by the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation (NAPF) and the Toda Institute, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Toda’s declaration. The editor of this volume, NAPF president David Krieger, has this message for all of us:

“Peace is an imperative of the Nuclear Age, and no peace worthy of the name can be built upon nuclear terror – the terror of threatening the use of these weapons against innocent civilians for any reason. Nuclear weapons are not weapons of war, but of mindless and cowardly slaughter. This has long been recognized by thoughtful individuals and groups. But it has yet to capture the public imagination that it is our collective responsibility, the responsibility of those alive on the planet today, to bring the Nuclear Age to an end. This is the challenge that our new book addresses. The book seeks solutions to the most overriding and urgent human security issue of our time.  We hope that it will contribute to a dialogue that will culminate in a world free of nuclear weapons.” --David Krieger, 8 September 2009--

The second book, Conflict, Religion and Culture: Domestic and International Implications for Southeast Asia and Australia (Philippines-Australia Studies Network and Ateneo de Manila, 2009) is co-edited by Joseph Camilleri, director of the Centre for Dialogue, La Trobe University, Australia (with Luca Anceschi and Benjamin T. Tolosa Jr.). It is partially the result of the Human Security, Regional Conflict and Global Governance (HUGG2) conference series organized by the Toda Institute.

These books are available through all major distributors, and the Toda Institute has some copies in stock for those who are interested.
