Dr. Majid Tehranian, Senior Research Fellow-Former Director
Dr. Majid Tehranian was the first director of the Toda Institute. He has previously taught at Harvard, Oxford, Tufts, USC, and Tehran universities. A political economist by education, Dr. Tehranian received his Ph.D. and master's degrees from Harvard University and his bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College. His teaching and research have focused on international relations problems with a particular focus on communication, peace, development, and democracy. He also specializes in Middle Eastern and Asia-Pacific affairs. He has served at both national and international organizations, as Director of Social Planning at the Plan Organization of Iran, Founding Director of Iran Communication and Development Institute (Tehran), Program Specialist at UNESCO (Paris), trustee of the International Institute of Communications (London), Director of the Matsunaga Institute for Peace at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (Honolulu), Council Member of International Peace Research Association, and Asia-Pacific Peace Research Association, and Active Member of the Club of Rome. In addition, he is the recipient of several awards, including an honorary doctorate from Soka University (Tokyo), United State Institute of Peace Grant, Fujio Matsuda Fellowship, International Communication Distinguished Service, and Meritorious Teaching Certificate. Tehranian's publications include over 25 books and 100 articles, translated in a dozen languages including French, Spanish, Italian, German, Norwegian, Finnish, Polish, Slovenian, Korean, Japanese, Bahasa Malay, Arabic, and Persian. He also edits Peace & Policy as well as the Toda Institute Book Series.
Dr. Eileen Babbitt, Senior Research Fellow-North America
Eileen F. Babbitt is Professor of International Conflict Management Practice and Director of the International Negotiation and Conflict Resolution Program at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. She is also a Faculty Associate of the Program on Negotiation at the Harvard Law School and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Her research interests include identity-based conflicts; coexistence and trust-building in the aftermath of civil war; and the interface between human rights concerns and peacebuilding. Her practice as a facilitator and trainer has included work in the Middle East, the Balkans, and with U.S. government agencies, regional intergovernmental organizations, and international and local NGOs. Before joining the Fletcher faculty, Professor Babbitt was Director of Education and Training at the United States Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C. and Deputy Director of the Program on International Conflict Analysis and Resolution at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs, Harvard University.
Professor Babbitt’s latest publications include the forthcoming article, “The Evolution of Internaional Conflict Resolution: From Cold War to Peacebuilding.” Negotiation Journal, 25th Anniversary Issue, and Human Rights and Conflict Resolution in Context: Colombia, Sierra Leone, and Northen Ireland. Co-edited with Ellen Lutz and published by Syracuse University Press.
Dr. Babbitt holds a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and a Ph.D. from MIT.
Dr. Sverre Lodgaard, Senior Research Fellow-Europe
Sverre Lodegaard obtained a Magister degree in political science, from the University of Oslo in 1971 with a thesis on: Interaction Trends and Integration Loads in the East-West System. He was Director of European Security and Disarmament Studies, Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) from 1980-1986 ; Director of the International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO) from 1987-1992; Director, United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), United Nations Office at Geneva from 1992-1996; and he was most recently Director of the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) from 1997–2007. Sverre has been a Senior Research Fellow at NUPI since mid-June 2007. Currently he is engaged in projects related to Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation, European security, and the Arab Spring and Iran . His latest book is Nuclear Disarmament and Non-proliferation, Routledge (UK), 2011.
Dr. Chaiwat Satha-Anand, Senior Research Fellow-Asia
Chaiwat Satha-Anand received his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. His research interests include nonviolent conflicts, religions and nonviolence, reconciliation, and violent ethnic conflicts. He has published more than twenty books at home and abroad. Some of his works have been translated into Bahasa Indonesia, Italian, Arabic, Japanese and Korean. His latest books include: Violence and "truth' Management (Thammasat University Press, 2008 -in Thai); Essays of the Three Prophets: Nonviolence, Murder and Forgiveness (Dunedin Abrahamic Interfaith 2011); and as editor: Imagined Land: the state and southern violence in Thailand (Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, 2009-in English). He is a professor of political science at Thammasat University, director of Peace Information Center, chairperson of the Strategic Nonviolence Commission in Thailand as well as a Senior Research Fellow, Toda Institute for Global Peace and Policy Research.
